Sewer drain pipes

Sewer drainage pipes are typically located within or under buildings and homes, and transport the sewage to the sewer main or septic tank. Sewer blockages can be caused by a huge range of issues such as:

  • a buildup of food scraps and grease
  • hair, soap, oil
  • broken or crushed pipes
  • tree root growth
  • foreign objects getting into the pipes (toys, deceased goldfish, bathroom wet wipes, etc)

Stormwater drains

Stormwater pipes are used to collect the water that runs off the roof of a property which then travels through separate pipes which is either connects with a stormwater pit or flows into a roadside gutter.

These pipes can become blocked by leaf debris, dirt, or tree roots which have entered the pipework underground or through a crack or break in the pipe.

No matter what the cause of your blocked drain or sewer, you can rely on our trusted plumbers to fix it.

When to call the plumbing experts?

Although some drain clearing and maintenance tasks can be safely undertaken by the homeowner, broken drain and pipe repairs are best carried out by a licensed, professional plumber. Why? Because if any errors are made in the repair or replacement of pipes, then this could lead to more leaks, blockages, or sewage back-ups – now that’s not a lot of fun!

Why Is my Drain Blocked?

causes of blocked drains gold coastMost blockages in your drains and pipes are caused by some common issues, most of which can be avoided.

Disposing of fats oils and grease down your kitchen sink is not only bad for your pipes but a major problem for council wastewater management leading to incredible fatbergs the size of small cars! Any fatty deposits should go in the trash to avoid it building up in your drain.

Tree root intrusion is a common problem for storm water and sewer drains. Large trees near your pipes can find there way in and rapidly grow in size absorbing the water and causing serious blockages.

Wet wipes although claiming to be “flushable” are another culprit for toilet drains. Sometimes young kids curiosity gets the better of them and they flush small toys or other objects.

Regular drain cleaning and knowing what to look for is important for early intervention. The signs of blocked drains are:

With any of these signs it’s time to act. If you don’t, soon the water may not drain at all and end up overflowing.

How Do I Unblock A Drain?

If you are wondering how to unblock a drain, there are some things you can try yourself. A plunger or drain snake can help with DIY drain clearing. However, clearing a blocked drain is just the beginning. If the issue that caused it in the first place isn’t addressed, then it’s likely to block again. In essence, the blockage is sometimes just a symptom of an underlying problem, such as a tree root having accessed a pipe through a crack. IF the blocked drain is persistent or keeps returning it’s best to get help.

What Do Plumbers Use To Unblock Drains?

Our team of experts regularly handle all types of blocked drains in the Gold Coast. Sometimes hand tools and some expertise is all that’s needed to get a drain flowing again. The best blocked drain plumbers use advanced drain clearing equipment for more seriously clogged drains.

Fortunately, digging up large areas of your property to find the cause of a blocked drain has become a thing of the past. We utilise the latest in plumbing technology, including a specialist camera system and software to carry out a CCTV survey. This enables a drain plumber to not only locate the exact whereabouts of the blockage but also to assess the structural condition and integrity of the drain or sewer – all without any disruption to your property or the environment.

A high pressure water jetter can clear the most stubborn blockages. They work by inserting a hose into the drain and blasting a high-pressure jet of water to break up the blockage water jet rodding and plumbers snake. If the pipe is damaged it still might be possible to fix a section using pipe relining technology. instead of digging up and replacing it.

Case Study: Tree Roots Blocking Drain

Bob has called us one Sunday afternoon concerned about an overflowing black grate at the back of his property.

He has advised us that this is the second time that this has happened this year. We recognised the urgency of the issue and the job was booked. We immediately prepared our Jet rodding machine and attended site within an hour of the initial call.

Jet Rodder and CCTV

Upon arriving onsite, Bob has kindly ushered us to the back of the hose where the sewer is overflowing. We have set up our jet rodding machine and cleared the blockage almost immediately. We then used our CCTV Drain Camera and Locator to identify what has caused the blockage and found that tree roots have invaded the line thru a break in the pipe at a depth of 700mm down the line. We have also noted that the affected section of the line is under a concrete slab at the back of the house.

Bob was watching the whole time and had questions about why this is happening again. We were happy to provide our expert opinion and in doing so we continued to advise him of a plan to rectify the issue. We have recommended to concrete cut approximately 1 meter by 1 meter of concrete around the back of the property were the inspection opening comes through concrete and dig down approximately 700mm to fix section that has tree roots in it. Bob has approved. The concrete cutter and materials were organised and we came back the following morning to finish the job. By Lunchtime, Bob was a happy camper. His sewer line has been repaired.

Bob was so happy that he has given us an excellent review rating and left a message stating:

“I was very pleased with the quick response to my call and then to the professionalism of your company to the job done. I am completely satisfied with work done.”

Blocked Drain FAQs

Is a blocked drain classified as an emergency?

If you pull out the plug after doing the dishes and the water doesn’t drain away as quickly as usual, there’s no doubt that a clogged drain is brewing. But compared to a gas leak, a burst pipe or a live electrical hazard, it’s obviously not an emergency.

However, once that blockage becomes complete and serious, you’re definitely starting to move into emergency territory! That is especially true for sewer drain blockages, where hazardous raw sewage could back up into your home, or you’re already ankle-deep in spilled water or waste that threatens to damage your property – or worse.

You’re also perfectly justified in getting your local emergency plumber out of bed on a Sunday morning if:

  • There’s also a water leak
  • The blocked pipes are rapidly worsening
  • When your home or business can no longer function properly
  • If you’re in the food or hospitality business
  • When the consequences are not contained to a single area.
What is the most common cause of blocked drains?

Blocked drains are among the most disruptive and potentially damaging of all the plumbing problems – but unfortunately there are many, many ways in which they are caused. According to the most hands-on experienced plumbers, it’s impossible to identify the clear ‘number 1’ blocked drain cause – but it’s certainly possible to narrow it down to a top 10.

If that experienced professional plumber was really pressed for an answer, however, they may tell you that tree root incursions cause the most problematic and serious clogged drains – because those roots can not only block the drains, they can also destroy them. Other leading blocked drain causes are:

  • Fats, grease & food debris
  • Toilet paper, sanitary products & wipes
  • Small single objects like kids’ toys
  • Balls of hair & shower soap
  • Concrete/tiler’s grout from renovations/construction
  • Pipe scale
  • Poor pipe installation/maintenance.
Who is responsible for clearing blocked drains?

If those blocked drains are on the bounds of your property, then the responsibility for dealing with it is all on you. In fact, it’s a responsibility that extends beyond your regard for your property, family & investment, because severe penalties and ramifications await in the event that your drain problems cause problems for your neighbours or wider community.

If you’re renting and you have a blocked drain, you therefore need to promptly get in touch with the property manager or the Landlord to let them know that the issue needs to be urgently addressed. But if you’re not sure if the problem is solely on the grounds of your property or whether the community drain (or stormwater drain) system could also be affected, get in touch with your local council or a trusted plumber to explore further.

What are the most common types of blocked drains?

Some of the most common types of blocked drains include:

Blocked Stormwater Drains: Stormwater drains can become blocked for various reasons, such as debris build-up, leaves, twigs, and dirt. During heavy rainfall, these blockages can lead to flooding and potential damage to the property if not addressed promptly.

Commercial Blocked Drains: Commercial properties often deal with higher volumes of wastewater, and commercial drains can get clogged with grease, sediment, and other materials. Businesses must take swift action to avoid disruptions to their operations.

Blocked Shower Drains: Hair, soap residue, and mineral deposits are the primary culprits behind blocked shower drains. Regular maintenance and using drain screens can help prevent such blockages.

Blocked Sinks: Your bathroom sink can get blocked due to a build-up of food particles, grease, soap scum, and foreign objects. Trying to clear the blocked sink using harsh chemicals can sometimes worsen the situation, so it’s best to seek professional help. Kitchen sinks are also particularly susceptible to blockages because of cooking oils, fats, and food waste that can solidify within the drain pipes. Proper waste disposal and regular maintenance can help prevent a blocked kitchen sink.

For all types of blocked drains, seeking assistance from licensed plumbers is crucial.
