Ensuring Gas Safety & Compliance in South East Queensland
On the Gold Coast, environmental factors like salt air in coastal suburbs such as Burleigh Heads can lead to the deterioration of gas fittings & regulators over time. We provide factual safety assessments to identify potential risks before they become hazards. Every gas project we complete concludes with the issuance of a Gas Compliance Certificate, which is a legal requirement in Queensland & essential for your property insurance.
If you suspect a gas leak or notice the smell of gas, it is critical to isolate the supply & contact a professional immediately. Our team is available for emergency call-outs to perform pressure testing & integrity checks. CUSTOMER STORY: Rotten Cabbage … Or Gas Leak?
Sometimes, your nose just isn’t enough – and it’s not because your sense of smell is still out of order from that recent covid-19 infection! We’re telling the lucky story here of Jane – from Parkwood, not too far from us here at Gold Coast Plumbing Experts.
Did you know that both natural gas and LPG actually don’t have a particular smell? When you accidentally leave the gas or you have an undetected leak, however, most people report being alerted to something being wrong by that familiar ‘gas smell’ – which most people liken to rotten eggs. That’s because gas suppliers add an odourant called Ethyl Mercaptan to the gas so that we know when unburned gas is where it shouldn’t be – including in our nostrils!
For Jane, though, she had just finished clearing out her fridge – because she’d been away for a week and, during that time, the fridge compressor stopped working. Long story short, she was storing no less than six cabbages in the crisper for her granddaughter, who had grown them in Agriculture class and needed to sell them for a school project. The result? Her entire kitchen reeked of rotten cabbage.
Coincidence of coincidences: while her fridge compressor failed, a tiny leak from her gas oven was happening at the same time. It was only when she called out a fridge repairer that he pointed out what she thought was the stench of actual rotten cabbages could actually be a gas leak!
Jane immediately called our experienced gas fitting team. We asked her if she had noticed anything other than the cabbage smell. Her answer was no, but she hadn’t felt very well – headache, nausea, dizziness and sore eyes. Arriving quickly on site, our Parkwood plumber found there was indeed a gas leak from a fitting connecting the oven which was replaced and tested. Jane, as it turns out, had had a lucky escape.

Gas Fitting FAQ
Does a plumber deal with gas?
While the best local plumbing businesses will probably also be able to offer you gas fitting services, it’s important to note that a plumber and a gas fitter are not always the same thing. The training, qualifications and licensing of the two professions are markedly different, although a great plumber will very often also be a great gas fitter!
To be clear, plumbers are concerned with pipes, drains, water and waste, but there is also some clear cross-over between plumbing and gasfitting – for instance, when you need a plumber to install your new gas hot water system. It’s no surprise, however, that the training and credentialing of plumbers and gas fitters are different, as working with gas is extremely dangerous and even minor errors can be potentially fatal. And a gas fitter is what you will need for your gas connections, gas appliance installations, gas repairs and servicing, the laying of pipes and more. You’ll also need to call a gas fitter if you sense a gas leak and need emergency help with the repairs.
But in most cases, a qualified and licensed gas fitter will be able to provide your plumbing services as well – and the best local plumbing services will be able to meet your plumbing as well as your gas fitting needs.
Can I do my own gas fitting?
Just like unauthorised DIY plumbing and electrical work, you also definitely cannot do your own gas fitting! Working with gas is obviously extremely dangerous, and can expose your property to devastating damage, explosions, fire and the emitting of potentially fatal fumes that can harm or kill your family. You can also be fined by your local authorities for illegal gas work, be ordered to have the gas work or installation professionally removed or certified, and void the warranties on your expensive gas appliances as well as your home insurance.
In every jurisdiction across Australia, any gas fitting work can only be carried out by a fully-licensed gas fitter. This applies not just to your home or business premises, but anything else including caravans and boats. And it’s not just the gas fitting license that your chosen gas fitter should be vetted for, but also their hands-on experience and highly specialised equipment, so don’t be shy to ask them about their skills and expertise.
That all being said, and if you possess the skills and confidence, you are normally allowed to connect and disconnect a gas cylinder and other portable gas appliances like BBQs and patio heaters.
What are the different types of gas fittings?
In almost all cases, the gas fittings installed throughout Australia are made from copper or brass – with the most common gas piping being copper. However, quite common these days are multi-layer composite gas piping systems known as Duopex and Gaspex, consisting of layers of polyethylene and aluminium.
Sections of pipe are connected together with the gas fittings or adapters, including:
- Elbows
- Tees
- Couplings
- Unions
- Compression fittings
- Caps, plugs & valves.
Don’t forget, working with gas is illegal in Australia without the assistance and certification of a fully-licensed gas fitter – apart from tasks as simple as connecting a gas bottle to a BBQ. The easiest rule to follow is that if the work you’re considering is related in any way to natural gas, LPG, gas lines or appliances, you’ll need to contact your local gas fitter. Only they will be able to help with installing, servicing and repairing gas pipes and gas appliances, all other tasks relating to your home or business premises’ gas services or connections, and the issuing of mandatory gas-related compliance certificates.
